Booking a home nursing visit in Kuwait: answers to the questions families ask first

Before booking a nurse for home, the questions pile up. Can the nurse give injections? Do I need a prescription? Can it be a female nurse? Can someone stay overnight? Who brings the dressings? Here are the questions we hear most about booking home nursing in Kuwait, answered directly and honestly — including where something needs to be confirmed for your specific case.

Quick answer: Key answers before booking home nursing in Kuwait: you can book for a single task or for care hours; any medicine or procedure needs the doctor's prescription; a female nurse is available subject to availability; supplies are agreed at booking; services such as injections, IV fluids and catheter care must be confirmed for your case and are given under medical supervision. Nurses do not diagnose or prescribe. To book or ask about your case: WhatsApp or call +965 98938009.

Before booking

Do I need a doctor's referral to book a home nurse?

Not for the booking itself, but any medicine or nursing procedure needs a prescription or written instructions from the treating doctor. Tasks without medicines — blood pressure checks or skin monitoring — can start without one, with readings shared with the doctor as needed.

How do I know whether my mother needs a nurse or just home help?

Nurses handle health tasks: wounds, medicines, readings, monitoring and care of medical devices. Feeding, bathing, companionship and everyday mobility help may not need a nurse unless tied to a complex medical condition. Describe the need and we will tell you honestly which fits; see physiotherapy versus nursing.

Can I book a single visit?

Yes — for a specific task, such as reviewing a wound or teaching the family to check blood sugar — or recurring visits as needed.

Should I book before discharge?

Yes, ideally a day or two before, sending the ward team's instructions so the first home visit is close to discharge and builds on the hospital plan.

About the nurse

Can the nurse be a woman?

Yes, subject to availability — mention it when booking. We pay particular attention to this for personal care and sensitive procedures. See female home nursing.

Which languages does the nurse speak?

Tell us the preferred language for the patient, family or domestic helper and we will try to match.

Will the same nurse come every time?

We aim for continuity because a nurse who knows the patient, the wound and previous readings follows up more accurately. If a change is needed we tell you in advance.

How can I check the nurse is qualified?

Ask about qualifications and experience with your type of case, and ask to see proof. In general, nurses working in Kuwait's health sector hold a professional licence from the competent authorities.

Tasks and limits

Can the nurse give injections at home?

Injections must be confirmed for your case before booking and are always given on prescription and according to the doctor's instructions. Tell us the injection and frequency and we will clarify.

Can the nurse set up an IV drip?

Home IV fluids require assessment of the case, confirmation of availability and clear medical supervision. They are only arranged on the treating doctor's instructions, and for some patients hospital is the safer setting.

Does the nurse care for urinary catheters and feeding tubes?

This is specialised care that must be confirmed for your case before booking and follows the doctor's instructions. Tell us the type, when it was placed and what exactly is needed.

Will the nurse change medicines if they seem wrong?

No. Nurses do not prescribe or change doses. If something needs review, the nurse will tell you and advise contacting the doctor.

Does the nurse clean the house or cook?

No, those are not nursing tasks, although the nurse may give general condition-related advice, such as fluid intake, in line with the doctor's instructions.

Asking about a specific task?

Send the task, prescription and area, and we will confirm whether it is possible for your case and when.

The first nursing visit

What happens at the first visit?

The nurse gets to know the patient and family, reviews reports, prescriptions and the medication list, then checks basic vital signs — blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen and sugar where relevant. They carry out the agreed tasks, such as a dressing change or a pressure-area check, and document findings. Finally they explain what to watch between visits, when to call the doctor, and agree the next visit. The first visit is usually a little longer for this reason.

Should medicines be ready before the first visit?

Yes. Have prescribed medicines at home with the prescription and a written list of current medicines, so the nurse can check timing and doses and spot any obvious duplication that needs a doctor's input.

Will the nurse teach the family?

Yes, it is a core part of the job: recognising wound infection, measuring and logging sugar, safely repositioning a bedbound patient, and what not to do — such as removing a dressing unnecessarily.

Safety and infection control

How does the nurse prevent infection?

Hand hygiene before and after procedures, gloves and clean or sterile items as appropriate, a clean work surface, and soiled dressings sealed in a bag. The family is asked for a handwashing spot and a clean surface near the patient.

How do we dispose of needles at home?

In a rigid, closed sharps container — never with household rubbish or in thin bags. The nurse explains safe disposal at the first visit, especially if a family member will inject under the doctor's instructions.

What does the nurse do if they spot a warning sign?

They tell the family immediately and explain the next step: a same-day doctor visit, or calling 112 in serious situations such as breathlessness, heavy bleeding or a change in consciousness. They do not try to manage at home what needs a hospital.

After hospital discharge

How many days of nursing will we need after surgery?

It varies with the operation, the wound and overall health. Needs are usually greatest in the first days and decrease as the wound heals and the patient stabilises. The nurse reviews the need with the family regularly and follows the doctor's instructions on stitch removal and when dressings can stop.

Does the nurse coordinate with the hospital doctor?

The nurse works to the treating doctor's instructions and documents observations so the family can show them at follow-up appointments. If the wound or readings need the doctor's input, the nurse advises the family to make contact and explains what to report.

Can you help a dialysis patient at home?

Nursing visits can support kidney patients with day-to-day monitoring — blood pressure, weight, swelling and skin care — following the nephrologist's instructions. Dialysis sessions themselves take place in dedicated centres. Tell us what the patient needs and we will clarify what can be provided.

Can a nurse accompany the patient to a hospital appointment?

Accompaniment is a different service from a home nursing visit and needs confirmation and advance arrangement. Give us the date, place and reason a nursing escort is needed, and we will explain the options.

Logistics

Can a nurse stay overnight?

Overnight or extended care needs confirmation and special arrangement. Tell us the hours, the period and the reason, and we will explain the options; see hourly, daily or monthly home nurse.

Who provides dressings and supplies?

Agreed at booking. Patient-specific supplies usually come from the pharmacy on prescription; we explain what the nurse brings and what the family arranges.

What if we need to postpone?

Tell us as soon as possible; details are explained at booking. Tasks tied to medication times may not allow postponement, so we will look for an alternative with you.

Do you cover all of Kuwait?

We serve all six governorates; availability varies by area and day.

Special situations

Can nursing and physiotherapy be combined?

Yes. Many patients after a stroke, surgery or long bed rest need both. We coordinate timing so the patient is not exhausted and each discipline supports the other.

My father has dementia and sometimes refuses. Is home nursing suitable?

Home is often better than hospital for people with dementia. Mention it when booking, pick a calm time of day, and have someone he trusts present for the first visits.

My mother has been bedbound for months. Home nursing or a care home?

It depends on how much daily care she needs and how much the family can provide. Many families in Kuwait prefer to keep a mother or grandmother at home among family, with regular nursing for health tasks, home help for daily care, and sometimes physiotherapy to keep joints moving. We can help you estimate what the case really needs; see bedridden patient nursing.
