First home nursing visit FAQ: what families ask before the nurse arrives

These are the questions families in Kuwait ask most when arranging a nurse’s first visit at home, grouped by what is on your mind: before the appointment, timing, during the visit, medical procedures, safety, special situations and afterwards. Answers are short, and each group links to the page with the full detail.

Quick answer: A first home nursing visit usually starts with a nursing assessment and a review of reports and medicines, then the prescribed procedure if there is one, and ends with guidance for the family and the next visit time if needed. It is timed to the written need, such as the next dressing change or dose, and it is best to enquire before hospital discharge. Any medical procedure needs a prescription or doctor’s instructions. To ask, WhatsApp +965 98938009.

Before the appointment

Do I need a doctor’s referral to request a nursing visit?

Not for a nursing assessment or general follow-up, but any medical procedure such as injections or surgical wound care needs instructions or a prescription from the treating doctor. Details are in first nursing visit terms.

What should I send before the visit?

The diagnosis, discharge summary if any, prescriptions, the time of the last procedure or dose in hospital, the medication list, your area and who will be at home. Ready-made messages by need are on the first nursing visit enquiry page.

Can we arrange the visit while the patient is still in hospital?

Yes, and it is better. Enquire two or three days before discharge if you can, then send the summary as soon as it is issued. The full timeline is in how to enquire about a first nursing visit.

Should we buy supplies in advance?

Use what the hospital issued or the doctor prescribed. We confirm at booking what the nurse brings and what the family should provide, so ask before buying anything special.

Timing

When is the first visit after discharge?

It depends on the written need: the next dressing change, the next dose, or the need for an early assessment of a frail patient. That is why we ask when the last procedure was done. See first home nursing visit in Kuwait for timing by type of need.

Can the visit be on discharge day?

It may be possible depending on schedule and area, but if something is due within hours of discharge, also ask the hospital whether it can be done before the patient leaves.

Can the visit be in the evening?

You can request it and it is confirmed according to the schedule. If the doctor set a medicine time, send it exactly as written.

How long does the first visit take?

Usually a little longer than later visits, because it includes assessment, reviewing reports and medicines and teaching the family, as well as the procedure. The expected length is given when the time is confirmed.

A question about timing?

Send the discharge date and what the patient needs and we will suggest the best time for the first visit.

During the visit

What does the nurse do at the first visit?

Gets to know the patient and family, checks vital signs, assesses general condition, skin and any wound, reviews instructions and medicines, carries out the prescribed procedure and explains what to watch for and when the next visit is. See the first nursing visit at Bidaya.

Does a family member need to be there?

Yes, we ask for an adult who knows the patient and can receive instructions. If the domestic helper is the one at home, a family member should ideally be reachable by phone.

Can our domestic helper help with care afterwards?

She can learn simple, safe daily tasks such as repositioning the patient or noticing certain signs, but medical procedures remain the nurse’s role.

Can I request a female nurse for a female patient?

Yes, confirmed according to availability. See private female home nursing.

Medical procedures

Can the nurse change a surgical dressing?

Yes, following the surgeon’s or treating doctor’s instructions on dressing type and frequency.

Can the nurse give injections at home?

That needs a clear prescription with name, dose, route and duration, and availability of the service for your case is confirmed when you enquire. Contact us to check before booking.

What about a urinary catheter or feeding tube?

This care needs medical instructions and confirmation that the service is available for the case. Mention the type of tube and when it was placed or is due to be changed.

Does the nurse check blood sugar and blood pressure?

Yes, vital signs and blood sugar are part of the nursing assessment, and it helps if the doctor has set the readings that should prompt a call.

After surgery

The patient has stitches or staples. Who removes them?

The surgeon decides when and by whom. If the instructions say removal at home, send them in your enquiry so it can be arranged at the right time and availability confirmed; if nothing was said, ask the surgeon before discharge.

The wound looks a little red. Should we wait for the first visit?

Mild redness can be normal in the first days, but if it spreads or comes with swelling, heat, discharge or a smell, contact the doctor without waiting. You can also mention it in your message to see if the visit can be brought forward.

Does the nurse follow up pain after surgery?

Yes. The nurse asks about pain levels, reviews prescribed painkillers and their timing, and tells the family if pain seems higher than expected and needs the doctor’s view.

Safety

What if the nurse finds the patient seriously unwell?

Safety comes first: the nurse advises calling 112 or going to hospital immediately and does not continue the scheduled procedure.

Is a nursing visit a substitute for emergency care?

No. Heavy bleeding, breathlessness, chest pain and loss of consciousness are emergencies that need an ambulance, not a nursing appointment.

How does the nurse prevent infection?

With hand hygiene, gloves, appropriate equipment and safe disposal of medical waste. A clean, well-lit area for the procedure helps.

Special situations

A bed-bound patient: what does the first visit focus on?

Skin and pressure areas, repositioning, food and fluids, and teaching the family safe daily care. Physiotherapy may be suggested later to prevent stiffness.

The patient has dementia or is wary of strangers

Mention it in advance; a reassuring family member present helps a lot. The first visit may be calmer and slower while the patient gets used to the nurse.

A diabetic patient after a treatment change

Send the new plan as the doctor wrote it and recent readings if you have them. The nurse reviews them and shows the family how to measure, record and spot signs that need the doctor.

Many medicines and fear of mix-ups

The nurse can review medicines with the family against the prescriptions and suggest an organised system, such as a weekly pill box and a written chart, without changing any medicine unless the doctor instructs.

A frail parent after a long admission, with no specific procedure

An early assessment is useful in itself: vital signs, skin, fluids and nutrition, mobility and fall risk. It shows whether more visits or physiotherapy are needed.

Family and carers

Who in the family should contact you?

Ideally one person who gathers information, receives confirmations and updates, and shares them with others, to avoid conflicting instructions.

Will the nurse teach us what to do between visits?

Yes, teaching the family is a core part of the first visit: what to watch, how to help safely, and when to call the doctor or emergency services.

Should we keep notes between visits?

Very helpful: a simple notebook of sugar or blood pressure readings, medicine times and any change in the wound, appetite or sleep. The nurse reviews it next time.

Privacy and homes in Kuwait

Can wound care be done in a closed room?

Yes, and it is preferred. The nurse explains first, respects modesty, and a patient who can decide may ask to pause or have someone present.

Are photos of the wound taken?

Only with consent and for monitoring changes, and shared only with people you name, such as the treating doctor.

We live in an apartment tower. What should we tell you?

The tower number, floor, whether there is a lift, any gate or guard instructions, and the best place to park. It saves time, especially at rush hour.

After the visit

Do we get a written summary?

We aim to send the family a summary of what was done, what to watch and the next visit time if needed.

How is the number of visits decided?

By the assessment and medical instructions, such as the number of injection days or dressing frequency, discussed clearly with the family.

What if we were not comfortable with the first visit?

Tell us directly. Early adjustments to timing, communication or a preference for a female nurse are much easier than continuing an arrangement that does not suit the patient.

Can physiotherapy be added after nursing?

Yes, if the need appears we can coordinate a joint nursing and physiotherapy plan.

Signs that need emergency care (112) or a doctor now

  • Bleeding that will not stop
  • Severe breathlessness or chest pain
  • Loss of consciousness or sudden confusion
  • High fever with shivering
  • Very low blood sugar with sweating

These are emergencies: call 112 or go to hospital immediately rather than waiting for the visit.

Frequently asked questions

Is the first visit different from later visits?

Yes. The first includes a fuller assessment, a review of reports and medicines and family teaching; later visits focus more on the procedure and follow-up.

Can the first visit be cancelled?

Yes, but tell us early, especially if it is tied to a medicine or dressing schedule. Cancellation details are confirmed at booking.

Do you cover all of Kuwait?

We take requests from all governorates and confirm the visit according to area and schedule.

Can a relative abroad arrange the visit?

Yes, with one person in Kuwait named to coordinate and be home for the visit.

Will the nurse speak English?

Mention your preferred language in the enquiry and we will take it into account where possible.

Which papers should be ready for the nurse?

The discharge summary, prescriptions, medication list and any written doctor’s instructions.

Will we know the cost before the visit?

Yes, cost and payment method are confirmed at booking according to visit type, length and area.
